What is Staycations Travel Insurance?
Staycations Travel Insurance is a type of travel insurance designed for individuals or families who are vacationing within their own country, rather than traveling abroad. It provides coverage for various unforeseen events that may disrupt or affect the domestic holiday. While traditional travel insurance often focuses on international trips, staycation insurance caters to travelers staying locally.
Here are some common features of staycation travel insurance:
- Cancellation and Trip Interruption Coverage: Reimbursement if you need to cancel or cut short your trip due to covered reasons (illness, emergencies, etc.).
- Accommodation and Travel Costs: Protection for prepaid accommodation or travel expenses, like hotels or car rentals, in case of disruptions.
- Medical Coverage: Some policies may cover emergency medical expenses incurred during your staycation, though this may overlap with domestic health insurance.
- Personal Liability: Covers damages or injuries you may accidentally cause to other people or property during your trip.
- Lost or Damaged Belongings: Insurance for personal items like luggage, electronics, or other valuables in case they are lost, stolen, or damaged.
- Roadside Assistance: Policies might include assistance if your car breaks down during the trip, an important feature for road-trip staycations.
Staycation insurance is becoming increasingly popular as more people opt for local vacations, and it offers peace of mind, even when traveling close to home.

Why do you need UK Travel Insurance?
Even when you’re staying closer to home, there’s still a risk of unexpected issues, and accidents can still happen. That’s why it’s important to make sure you and your travelling companions are fully covered. Any medical treatment you need in your home country will be covered by the NHS.
However, you’ll still need Travel Insurance in case something is wrong with your accommodation, there are any delays or cancellations, or your need cover for your valuables. For example:
- When you’re away from home, you’ll likely be snapping some holiday photos or even taking your laptop with you. While away from home, electronics can be at a higher risk of being dropped or stolen. Our Gadget Cover will help you with costs if there are issues with your valuables.
- Even when travelling domestically, you can still encounter delays or disruptions caused by adverse weather, strikes or mechanical failure. We can provide cover for additional expenses as a result, from accommodation to alternative travel.
- While Covid-19 is less prevalent than in previous years, it could still impact your holiday.. This could lead you or one of your travelling party to cancel your trip or come home early. We can make sure you’re protected should this happen.

UK Staycations Travel Insurance FAQ's
Frequently asked questions about Staycations and UK only Travel Insurance for UK Holidays
The cost of any Travel Insurance policy will vary based on various factors, such as where you are visiting and what you plan to do there, as well as your age and any pre-existing medical conditions you might have. Each of these will change the cost of your Travel Insurance policy.
The maximum duration covered for a single trip taken within the UK is up to 365 days. If you choose an Annual Multi-trip policy, you’ll be covered for an unlimited number of trips of up to 45 days. For longer stays, this can be extended up to 55 days per trip.
You do not need a GHIC when travelling within the UK, as it covers only local medical expenses in EU countries. While travelling in the UK you’ll be eligible for NHS treatment for medical emergencies, even if you’re on holiday, so there is no need for the GHIC. Reciprocal Healthcare Agreements are in place between the UK and the Channel Islands (except for Guernsey) and the Isle of Man, so you will be covered there too.
We’re pleased to say our Top Travel policies have no upper age limit. You’ll only be shown quotes that can cover your age category during your quote.
For Single Trip policies, full benefits begin on the travel dates you have selected. However, if you’ve chosen cancellation cover to be included, this cover begins as soon as you buy your policy. For this reason, it’s important to buy your Travel Insurance as early as possible – or as soon as you have your trip booked. If you’ve chosen an Annual Multi-trip policy, cover will begin on the start date you select. If you already have a holiday booked and have chosen to include cancellation cover, it could be worth starting your policy immediately to get the maximum benefit.
It depends on how often you intend to travel during the next 12 months. If you’re going on holiday multiple times throughout the year, an Annual Multi-trip policy could work out better value for you. With an Annual Multi-Trip Policy you can travel as many times as you like throughout your insurance cover. There are, however, limits on the number of days you can be away for any one trip.

The Government of Jersey strongly recommends getting Travel Insurance if you are planning on visiting. They also recommend that if you’re getting Travel Insurance for visiting Jersey, you make sure that your policy covers repatriation and medical transfers for treatment. While travelling in the UK you’ll be eligible for NHS treatment for medical emergencies. Reciprocal Healthcare Agreements are in place between the UK and Jersey. If you need Travel Insurance for Jersey, Top Travel Insurance covers Jersey as part of its definition (we cover all the Channel Islands.)
The Isle of Man Government, as well as the Governments of the respective Channel Islands, all recommend that you should have Travel Insurance when visiting from the mainland UK. While travelling in the UK you’ll be eligible for NHS treatment for medical emergencies. Reciprocal Healthcare Agreements are in place between the UK and the Channel Islands (except for Guernsey) and the Isle of Man. When buying a Travel Insurance policy for visiting the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, your policy must cover repatriation and medical transfers for treatment, as these are usually extremely costly if you need to be transferred back to the mainland to be treated.
