What is Golf Cover for You and Your Equipment

Golf Cover is a specialized type of travel insurance designed to protect golfers and their equipment during trips or vacations. It provides coverage for various risks and issues that can arise while golfing, ensuring both personal safety and the protection of valuable equipment. This type of insurance can either be a standalone policy or added as an option to a standard travel insurance policy.

Here’s what golf cover typically includes:

1. Golf Equipment Coverage
  • Loss, Theft, or Damage: Provides reimbursement or replacement for golf clubs, bags, and other golfing gear that are lost, stolen, or damaged during the trip. This includes both personal and rented equipment.
  • Delayed Equipment: Compensation for renting replacement golf gear if your equipment is delayed (e.g., by an airline) and doesn’t arrive on time for your game.
2. Golf Equipment Hire
  • Cost of Renting Clubs: Reimbursement for the cost of hiring golf clubs if your own equipment is lost, damaged, or delayed during your trip.
3. Non-Refundable Green Fees
  • Unused Green Fees: Coverage for prepaid green fees (booking fees to play on a golf course) if you’re unable to play due to reasons like illness, injury, or severe weather.
  • Course Closure: Some policies may provide compensation if the golf course is closed unexpectedly, preventing you from using your green fees.
4. Hole-in-One Coverage
  • Celebration Costs: A unique feature in some golf insurance policies, where you receive a payout to cover the cost of the traditional clubhouse celebration (buying drinks for others) if you achieve a hole-in-one during a tournament.
5. Personal Liability
  • Third-Party Liability: Provides coverage in case you accidentally injure someone else or damage their property while golfing, such as hitting another golfer with a stray ball or damaging a golf cart.
6. Medical Coverage for Golf-Related Injuries
  • Emergency Medical Treatment: Covers medical expenses if you’re injured while playing golf, including hospital stays or treatment costs.
7. Trip Cancellation or Curtailment
  • Golf-Specific Cancellation: Offers compensation if your golf holiday is canceled or cut short due to covered reasons (such as illness or injury) and you lose prepaid golfing expenses like accommodation or green fees.
8. Travel Disruption
  • Missed Tee Times: Compensation for missing pre-booked tee times due to travel delays or cancellations, ensuring you don’t lose out on your golfing experience.
Important Considerations:
  • Value of Equipment: Golf clubs and accessories can be expensive, so make sure your policy offers sufficient coverage to replace your equipment in case of loss or damage.
  • Pre-Existing Medical Conditions: Declare any pre-existing health conditions, as these might affect your ability to claim medical or trip cancellation coverage.
  • Limits on Coverage: Be aware of maximum limits for individual items like clubs, bags, or personal belongings.

Golf cover ensures that both you and your equipment are protected, offering peace of mind for golfing enthusiasts, whether you’re on a weekend getaway or an international golfing trip.

What is golf equipment cover?

Golf equipment cover can protect the cost of replacing valuable golf clubs if they’re lost, stolen, vandalised or accidentally damaged.

Some specialist policies offer ‘new-for-old cover’ which means a new replacement for your golf clubs even if they weren’t brand new. This isn’t usually offered if you bought the clubs second-hand. There might also be a limit on how old the clubs can be to be eligible for this type of cover.

What is and isn’t included in golf equipment insurance?

You can expect golf equipment insurance to cover your golf clubsballsbags and trollies. It can also cover your golf clothing, including golf shoes and other wearable items. If you’re a good golfer, it can also cover any trophies you’ve won.

Golf insurance doesn’t normally cover any wear and tear to your golf gear. Also, some policies only cover this stuff when you’re playing on the golf course. This means you should check any policy wording carefully and take out additional cover if necessary. If it’s stored at home, or you’re travelling, it could come under a general contents insurance, personal possessions or travel insurance policy. If your golf equipment is stolen while left unattended, this won’t be covered. Golf buggies are also generally excluded from cover, but could be added to your policy as an extra.

Golf & Equipment Cover FAQ's

Frequently asked questions about Golf and Equipment Cover

Do you need golf insurance?

Golf insurance isn’t a legal requirement like car insurance. However, if you’ve invested a decent amount of money in your clubs and other gear (which is easy to do in golf!) then you should definitely consider taking out some cover to protect it all.

How much golf insurance cover do I need?

That depends on how much you’ve invested in your golf clubs and other gear. Try and total up the cost of your clubs, balls, clothing, bags, trolley, buggy etc. and take out the cover you need to protect what’s most important to you. A full set of clubs can cost well over £1,000, and that’s just the start.

What does a specialist golf insurance policy cover?

Golf is considered a relaxing sport, but it still comes with a few risks. If you’re a regular golfer, you might want to think about specialist golf insurance that includes:

Third party liability insurance
If you accidentally hit someone while out on the golf course, you could be liable to pay damages if they’re injured or their property is damaged. Public liability insurance can help protect you against these costs.

Personal accident cover
Being hit by a golf ball can cause serious injury. This covers legal and medical bills if you’re injured out on the golf course.

Hole-in-one cover
It’s tradition that if you get a hole-in-one, you have to buy a round of drinks for the clubhouse. That could cost a pretty packet! Believe it or not, hole-in-one insurance covers the bar bill.

It seems a bit extreme to take out insurance for a round of drinks. Plus, the odds of an amateur getting a hole-in-one are pretty slim – about 12,500 to one. So you might only want to consider this cover if you’re a member of a golf club and a stickler for tradition.

Does golf insurance include hiring equipment?

Most specialist golf insurance policies will cover the cost of hiring replacement clubs if yours have been stolen or damaged.

Will my golf equipment be covered abroad?

If you like to go on golfing holidays, you can get a specialist golf travel insurance policy to cover you while abroad.

Most standard golf insurance policies only cover use in the UK. However, some may let you add on worldwide cover at an extra cost. Just remember that you might already be covered if you have travel insurance.

Is my golf equipment covered when it’s in my car?

Golf insurance may only cover your equipment while you’re playing golf, so be sure to check your policy wording and take out additional cover if necessary. Personal possessions insurance could cover your golf equipment while you’re travelling and if it’s locked out of sight in the boot.

Again, you should check what other policies you have. If you have comprehensive car insurance personal possessions in your car might already be covered. However, the cover limit is usually low in comparison to the value of a full set of golf clubs.

Can I get cover for my golf buggy?

Golf buggy cover can usually be added to a golf insurance policy at an extra cost, although some specialist insurance providers may also offer it as a standalone policy. Cover usually includes injuries to third parties if hit by your golf buggy.
