Over 50s Travel Insurance FAQ's

Frequently asked questions about Over 50s Travel Insurance.

Does Travel Insurance cost more when you turn 50?

Age is just one factor which can affect the cost of a policy, alongside;

  • Your destination.
  • Your medical conditions.
  • The length of your trip.
Does Travel Insurance have upper age limits?

We believe that age should not be a barrier to enjoying the world, which is why our Travel Insurance policies have no upper age limit. You can keep exploring the world through your 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond.

What does Travel Insurance for Over 50s cover?

Travel Insurance for Over 50s covers medical emergency, repatriation, valuables, loss of baggage, and cover for travel delays or missed departures.

At Top Travel Cover, we also offer additional extras such as:

  • Waiting List: If you’re on a medical waiting list and have booked your holiday, upgrade to cover against any cancellation or curtailment that may occur as a result.
  • Golf cover: Extra cover for golf-specific issues, including green fees and golf equipment.
  • Gadget cover: Protect your most important items, from phones to laptops for up to up to £3,000.
  • Excess waiver: On some of our policies you can choose to waive the excess and pay nothing in the event of a claim.
When should you buy over 50s Travel Insurance?

You should buy over 50s Travel Insurance as soon as you have booked your holiday. This will mean you’ll be covered if any issues arise between booking and taking your holiday.

Remember that you need to have purchased a Travel Insurance policy before you leave the UK for it to be valid.

Do you need Over 50s Travel Insurance if you have a GHIC card?

You still need a valid Travel Insurance policy even if you have a GHIC. The GHIC, formerly known as the EHIC, is not a replacement for Travel Insurance. It covers you for some unexpected medical costs while in Europe, but it does not cover other costs, such as transport to or from a hospital, as well as lost valuables, cancelled flights or accommodation.

Do you need to declare all your medical conditions for Travel Insurance?

Yes, you need to declare all of your pre-existing medical conditions when buying your travel insurance – even if you feel as though your conditions will not cause any problems. If you don’t, you may find that your policy is invalid and be liable for all costs as a result.

What factors will affect the cost of Over 50s Travel Insurance?

If you have pre-existing conditions, you need an over 50s Travel Insurance policy that covers them. This will impact the price of your policy.

Other things can affect the price of your policy include:

  • Destination: Some destinations have higher medical costs or greater risks than others.
  • Trip length: Longer trips mean a higher chance you’ll need to make a claim. If you’re looking for a single-trip policy, the price will depend on how long your planned trip is.
  • Optional extras: You can amend your policy to suit your needs by adding extra cancellation cover, or increased baggage protection. We also offer additional cover for cruises, or golf. However, adding this extra protection can impact the price of your policy.
Does being over 50 affect how long you can travel on the Travel Insurance policy?

No, your age does not limit how long you can travel on your Travel Insurance policy. However, your specific policy type does.

  • If you have Single Trip Travel Insurance, you can be away on a single trip for up to 365 consecutive days and still be covered.
  • If you have Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance, you can go abroad multiple times a year, but each trip cannot last longer than 45 days.
  • If you need to be away longer than 45 days, you’ll need our Extended Stay optional extra. This extends the cover available per trip to 50 or 55 days, depending on the level of cover you choose.
Does the over 50's Travel Insurance cover include repatriation?

Yes, all our Travel Insurance policies include repatriation cover. If anything happens while you’re away that means you need to be flown back to the UK for treatment, you won’t be out of pocket.

Can you get over 50's cover if you're on a waiting list for treatment?

Yes, you can still get Over 50s Travel Insurance if you’re on the waiting list for treatment. We would recommend getting Waiting List Cover as an optional extra for your policy. This will cover you against any cancellation or curtailment if you’re moved up the list for treatment.

How often can you travel with Travel Insurance for over 50s?

There is no limit to how often you can travel if you have Over 50s Travel Insurance. If you have Single Trip Travel Insurance, you’ll only be covered for a single trip of up to 365 days.

If you’re planning to be away more often than once a year, we’d recommend getting Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance, as this will cover you for multiple trips throughout the year, but each trip cannot last longer than 31 days.
